‘Just a little more,’ Sandra thought to herself, reaching what felt like the center of Amy’s madness. Love and worry and confusion abounded, all swirling together in a maelstrom of emotion. The shattered edges of Sandra’s manipulation threaded through all the other emotions. They felt like little knife blades against her skin. Slowly, ever so slowly and carefully, Sandra removed her manipulations. Removing and starting from scratch was the only way to guarantee Amy wouldn’t tip over the edge.

First went the jealousy, the touch of a knife against her thumb sliding past Sandra’s consciousness. Greed was next, a little harder to get rid of. Metal cascaded against her and Sandra had to fight her own inclination to savor the emotion and Amy’s desire to hold onto it. Greed was a part of her, though not to the extent Sandra had pushed it. But finally, the greed let go and faded away.

Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, Sandra started on the desire for fame. This one didn’t have a physical aspect to it. Instead it was a sound, like fireworks in her ears. That was another emotion that Amy clung to. She’d wanted to be the person others came to for answers, the problem-solver everyone knew about. She wanted to be important, wanted to be the one whose name everyone knew. The fireworks were loud in her ears, stubbornly hanging on. It was at this point that Amy started to fight her, clinging even harder to her emotions.

“Stop fighting, Amy, I’m trying to help you,” Sandra murmured under her breath.

“Did you say something?” Eric asked, tilting his head to the side as he studied Sandra and Amy.

“Just talking to myself,” Sandra replied. She’d closed her eyes sometime during her effort to smooth away the greed and didn’t bother to open them now. “Now hush. If I’m talking to you, I’ll say your name.”

“She told you to hush and told me to shut up,” Michael pointed out, feeling a flash of anger run through him. It really was about time to head to that beach. Once they were finished here in Chicago, he’d take his share and go. He’d get over Sandra. He grimaced when Eric just shrugged, looking unconcerned. It mattered. Words mattered and Sandra knew that just as well as he did. She was the one who’d wanted to be a lawyer. Words were tools in the hands of a lawyer.

The desire for fame was stubborn but even that couldn’t stand up to Sandra’s determination. The fireworks faded away as the emotion finally started to let go. When it was gone, smoothed away as if it had never been, there was silence in Sandra’s ears again. That was the last of her framework, the last bits of the cage she’d built of Amy’s own emotions. Now to start on what had broken that cage. With the shattered remains gone, she could fix the damage and rebuild her manipulations.

Confusion was the first thing she concentrated on this time. Blunt objects pressed against her neck and her chest but were easily ignored.
